Light is one of the essential factors to consider while designing a retail application. Light can create an attractive and welcoming atmosphere for customers, contributing to the success of the retail. Whether or not the retailers already recognize the importance of the light, they still do not know how to create a lighting design correctly. That is the reason why you - as an architect - hold a vital key when designing light for them.

There is a great variety of factors to consider while creating a lighting design for a retail application. Some of them were listed in one of our previous articles, while in this blog post we will talk more about the importance of the layer lighting in the retail application. Combining different layers of light will make sure the proper illumination of the space without excessive glare.

1. Accent Lighting – Brighten up display areas

This lighting type is usually used to highlight specific areas, the new product or location that needs special attention. This type of light can be used in several places such as front door, sign, logo, and display stand. For example, with the entrance to the shop, the appropriate lighting should be applied to make the customer feel welcome.

Accent light is helpful in increasing customers’ mood and thus making it more likely for customers to stay in the store longer than they intend to. For example, track light or downlight is a good way for accent lighting. They emit light in the direction of the narrow-angle, focusing on one specific point to create an impressive light. Especially, by combining bright and dark design on the display shelf, they give prominence to the products. Furthermore, track light and downlights are mostly designed with a qualified light source, high CRI, low heat output which ensures the safety of the goods and enables a high-quality light.

There are some particular areas should be noticed such as:

Entrance to the shop: we should apply appropriate lighting to make the customer feel welcome. Here you can design lights to highlight new models, promotional messages.

Product Showroom: By combining bright and dark design on the shelf, it not only highlights the product but also creates a charming effect on the customer, which is convincing to customer’s sensation and psychology determine their shopping behaviour’s.

2. Task Lighting – Light up working places

Normally, this type of lights is used to illuminate some areas that need more light than usual to perform specific tasks. For example, more light is required in the changing rooms so the customers can accurately assess the products. A study conducted by Alert Technologies found that about 67% of customers’ decisions were made in the fitting room. Lighting in this room brings a more beautiful eye-catching effect which helps to stimulate customers’ demand.

3. Decorative Lighting

The purpose of decorative lighting is to increase the luxury vibe of the store and achieve a suitable atmosphere. After installing accent and task lighting, chandeliers with LED bulbs can be used to fill up the missing piece in lighting design. Putting this light in the right position will level up the atmosphere in the store following the general theme of the retail application.

4. General Lighting – Fill in the gaps

The purpose of general lights is to provide the general illumination of the application. Depending on the amount and the color, it must ensure that the store does not look gloomy when installing this light. It creates a comfortable atmosphere for the customer when they get in. The required criteria usually include brightness, light color, CRI, and angle.

• In the small retail applications, downlights or tracklights are popular options. Downlights are usually installed in a grid pattern with equal spacing throughout the ceiling. They are suitable for plaster, concrete, plastic and wood ceiling.

• In the spacious room with high ceilings, panel light is a good solution.
